What's Data Manager?
In collaboration with Global Health Labs, my team at ION Design and I designed a web application called Data Manager in 2021.
Integrating data from the AVE (Automated Visual Evaluation) app, which uses machine learning to detect pre-cancerous lesions, the Data Manager app streamlines the workflow for analyzing and sharing cervical cancer screening data.
Data Manager app supports clinicians by centralizing results and treatment notes for patients in low-and middle-income countries, where access to healthcare resources may be limited. Clinicians working locally or from countries with more advanced healthcare systems collaborate remotely using Data Manager, ensuring coordinated care and timely interventions for patients in these underserved areas.
My Responsibility
Working closely with GHL product team and subject matter experts to:
Map complex workflows and design wireframes
Ensure that the experiences catered to different types of users
Iterate on the designs based on user feedback and testing
Challenge
Complex User Workflows & Access Levels. Each user group had distinct goals and permissions, I had to prioritize how to streamline their work
Managing Data Conflicts. With AVE uploading screening results to Data Manager, I had to carefully design how the system would handle potential conflicts.
Some user tasks, particularly for clinicians and data entry users, were time-consuming. I broke down longer processes into manageable steps, focusing on reducing cognitive load and preventing errors.

Registration
Initially, we conceptualized a separate field research app for clinicians and volunteers to visit households and collect data on women at risk of cervical cancer. However, following feedback from the product team, we integrated this feature directly into the Data Manager app.
As a result, the scenario shifted from field research to a clinical setting, where clinicians now manage the patient registration and eligibility process.

Key User Flows
Key tasks of admin users
Key tasks of clinician users - HPV sample collection, document histopathology, treatment notes
Follow-up cards design
Show up at the top of patient record. Triggered by events below:
HPV test result not received
HPV positive
HPV test inconclusive
Appointment missed
Pathologist recommend additional treatment

Information Mismatch & Conflict Resolution
Information mismatch posed a significant risk. We designed the system to flag mismatched data and allow users to upload it with a warning. The flagged items would then be referred to administrators for further review.
Information mismatch warnings
By integrating feedback from the AVE app and optimizing for task efficiency and conflict resolution, we delivered a tool that contributed significantly to GHL's mission of reducing cervical cancer through early detection.
